Paris 2024 Summer Olympic Games
Key points
- A highly augmented security posture for the duration of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games (particularly in the capital Paris) will help to mitigate against various security threats.
- Islamist terrorism will remain a key threat; a rudimentary attack by a sole perpetrator is a realistic possibility despite the heightened security measures.
- The snap parliamentary election (30 June and 7 July) will possibly exacerbate activism, domestic unrest and industrial action risks significantly; we assess these risks are already moderate-to-high.
- Environmental activists are highly likely to protest against the Games and their sponsors, though we assess that their ability to disrupt the events will remain low overall.
- The form of crime that is most likely to affect foreign visitors is theft. Nonetheless, isolated instances of violent crime are possible, particularly in ÎIe-de-France region and Marseille (Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region).
Context
From 26 July to 11 August and 28 August to 8 September, Paris will host the 2024 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games, respectively. In addition to the capital and the wider ÎIe-de-France region, events will be held in Biarritz, Bordeaux, Chateauroux, Lille, Lyon, Marseille, Nantes, Nice, Saint-Étienne, Toulouse and the overseas territory of French Polynesia. The Games represent a major organisational and security challenge for the authorities. The snap parliamentary election has compounded this challenge by adding an extra layer of uncertainty. President Emmanuel Macron called the election after the hard-right National Rally (RN) party secured first place in the European Parliament (EP) elections on 6-9 June.
